Setup:
I will walk around with a microphone and
someone will be filming me with a camcorder to make it seem real.
Note:
I have scripted most of this. Some things
will have to be adlibbed, however, depending on responses from the children.
Intro:
Tell the kids that I need them to use
their imaginations today.
Ask them to pretend
this:
It is a beautiful Spring afternoon and
they have just come out of General Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah.
I am a reporter from the Primary Television (PTV) Network and I am going
to interview them LIVE for the National news. I am from New York City and
am not a member of the church, so I don’t know a lot about the church.
Have them visualize themselves in Salt Lake ("the mountains are over there,
the Great Salt Lake would be that way, etc.).
Barbara (presidency person) - Into
Camera/facing kids:
This is Barbara Chung, reporting live
from Salt Lake City, Utah, outside the brand new Mormon Conference Center.
It is across the street from one of their many temples.
The Mormon Church has been holding what
they call "General Conference" for the past two days. Let’s talk to some
of the church members leaving the conference to find out more about it.
Barbara (to any child): Can you tell me what is going on here today?
Child #1: will say something about attending Conference (hopefully).
Barbara: What exactly goes on at one of these Conferences?
Child #2: Response
Barbara: I’ve been calling your church the Mormon Church. Now, that’s not really the name of your church, is it? What is the name of your church?
Child #3: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
Barbara: So you guys follow Jesus Christ. Don’t you also believe that you have a living prophet that leads your church here on earth for Jesus Christ?
Child: Yes
Barbara: Did he speak to you today?
Child: Yes
Barbara: Can someone tell me what your prophet spoke about during this Conference?
(Note: I will hand out some cards beforehand to teachers --and some kids in Sr. Pr)
Teacher: (Card #1) "In one talk he discussed the temples that are being built. He had made a goal of building 100 temples and he said that by the end of the year 2000 there were more than 100. Right now there are 121 temples that are built or have been announced."
Barbara: Wow! That’s an amazing statistic! We have to take a commercial break right now, but we will be right back to talk to church members about what their prophet told them in their General Conference.
COMMERCIAL BREAK
Sing song about Temples: "I Love to See the Temple”
Barbara: We’re back at the Conference for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where these people here claim to have just heard the words of a Living Prophet. I’m curious to find out what else their prophet told them.
Barbara: (to a Teacher with Card #2): Can you tell me if there was ONE special topic that your prophet stressed in this Conference?
Teacher: (Card #2) Yes, He stressed how important Faith is. He talked about the faith of the pioneers who suffered greatly to bravely make their way to the Salt Lake Valley. But he also said that just like they had faith, the members of the church today have great faith and that it shows in everything we do. . . like when we pay tithing, go on missions, or live the Word of Wisdom.
Barbara: Yes, that is pretty impressive. I’m afraid we need to take another commercial break and hear from our sponsors.
Commercial Break
Sing song about Faith "Faith"
Barbara: We’re back outside the LDS Conference. We’ve got time to speak to one more Conference visitor and hear about how they felt at Conference today.
Leader: (Our Primary Pres was able to actually attend Conference on Saturday morning and heard the prophet speak. She will relate her personal feelings about that experience.)
Barbara: Thank you for sharing that with us. It sounds like you really had a special experience today listening to your prophet speak.
Well, that’s all the time we have for today. Back to you Jodie (the song leader) in the studio.
That’s where I will end for the JR Primary and then I will go a little farther for the Sr. Primary.
Barbara: What were some of the other things that were talked about at this Conference?
Child: (Card #3) Someone from the General Primary Presidency gave a talk about Miracles.
Teacher (Card #4) I remember that talk. It was Sydney S. Reynolds. She said that just like there have been mighty miracles like the parting of the red sea, we all experience personal miracles that teach us to have faith in the Lord.
Barbara: Wow, that’s pretty exciting to think that we have miracles happening even today. Is there anyone else that would like to tell us about one of the talks they heard today?
Child: (Card #5) I liked the talk that Elder David B. Haight gave. His talk was on Gratitude and Service and he told some good stories.
Teacher: (Card #6) He told a story of how his Grandparents traveled for six or seven days in a wagon in rough conditions so that they could be married in the temple. He said that he was very grateful to them for that and that it was a blessing in his life.
Barbara: Well, it sounds like there was some good information given here this weekend and that it was a spiritual experience. Maybe I will try to make it to the next General Conference and find out more about your church.
Back to you Jodie, in the studio.
Now we will play a game suggested in the Friend this month…musical notes are placed on the floor and a child throws a bean bag. Which ever one is landed on, the number on it is read aloud and the pianist plays the first few notes and the children try and guess what song it is. The topic of the song relates to something talked about in Conference. I give a little info on the topic before the song.
The Game
1. Baptism: "When I am Baptized"
