Music game: Name that tune
(shared by Terri Finney, Ft. Worth, TX)
There are a few ways to play this game.
Draw a music staff on a piece of poster board, and then make Several notes out of black construction paper or card stock. (If using construction paper, laminating them will make them last much longer, and they can be used for other games.) Place the notes on the poster board so the make the first line of a primary song, and see if the children can guess the song. Since many of the children will not be able to read the music, have the pianist play the first few notes and keep adding more notes until one of the children guesses the song. After the song is guessed, then have the children sing the song.
Chimes: Take some empty canning jars or any other glass jars you may have, and fill them up with varying amounts of water. You will need 7 or 8 jars to make a complete scale. (It will take some time to determine how much water to put in the jars and tune them, so be sure to draw a line on the jar where you will fill the water to-- then it will be very easy to reuse them without having to worry about tuning them) Use food coloring to give each jar a different colored liquid, and make some color-coded music to correspond with the jars. Have the children play the music on the jars (one child per jar) by reading the music.
