Never assume that the child proof safety
caps are still on the electric outlets. Always check when you set up your
room.
Never let children eat snacks on the run.
Make it a rule that if they want a snack they have to sit down to eat it. If
they get up take the snack from them and tell them you will return it if
they sit
down.
Never let the children take out all of the
toys- and one toy and they don't get another until they put that one up.
These toys left can make an obstacle course for you or the children. If you
are
needed fast across the room that is what you will be going through...
Sissors should not be used in the Nursery.
Everything should be cut out ahead of time. If this is not possible then
have one of the assistants take them out of the room and cut them up after
the
children have colored something. Everything else should be cut up ahead of
time in preparation.
If you use brads in your activity always
use a piece of contact paper or packing tape over the back of the brad. So
small hands can not take brad out and swallow it. And tell Parents about
brad when they pick up their child so when their work is worn out from play
they can remove brad.
Even "free play" needs some kind
of control. Ask parents not to let their children bring their own toys. This
just a fight waiting to happen...:0)
Only have toys that can be cleaned up with
soap and water. No soft or stuff toys that can be chew on but not cleaned up.
This is an Health hazzard.( May get an older child working on their Gospel
in Action or Achievement girls to help to clean the toys ...:)
Watch the bags that are brought. Never
know when something in these to choke or present a danger to the children.
Let the parents keep diaper bags because if a child needs changing you take
the child to the parent to do so.
Any ledges on chalk boards in the room
needed to be padded or rounded off on the corners. The same on the window
ledges. Talk to your Bishop about this.
Do not have any climbing equipment in the
Nursery.
For safty sake always have two people in
the Nursery. If you had to leave suddenly for any reason ( diaper changing,
child hurt, face washing, bathroom break for you or a child ) someone needs
to be with the other children. Then on your way out you need to notify
primary leaders so they can help til you get back - remember two in the
Nursery...
Another hint that I suggested on another
list I belong to was to get a gate for those doors that have to be open so
much :))) Run aways can move so fast sometimes.. :0)
***Guess what I saw at a Ward
Conference that I attended as Nursery Leader? Someone had turned the
chalkboard upside down putting the sharp edges on top. No sharp edges for
children to run in to... Thought this was a good safety tip to share.
