can learn more about Jesus and His commandments as I read the scriptures |
Do you remember what you learned in sharing time at the beginning of the year? (Discuss.)
Do you remember what you were like when you were a baby? (Discuss.)
It is hard to remember things we learned or did a long time ago.
Show baby book. I know a lot about what I was like when I was a baby because my mother kept a journal for me in this baby book.
Do you have a baby book?
She wrote down lots of important things, like when I had my first bath, when
I got teeth, and when I learned how to walk. She told me about funny things
that I said and did, and that I really liked to sing when I was little. My
mother also told me how much she and my dad loved me! They loved helping me
grow up, and always wanted me to be happy. Now, because I have my baby book,
I can read it and learn about all of these things.
Show scriptures. Our Heavenly Father loves us very much, too. He has given us sacred books called scriptures.
Do you have scriptures?
Through ancient and latter-day prophets, He has written important things in
the scriptures that will help us be happy. These are called commandments or
teachings. Sometimes we can forget what Jesus wants us to do. If we
read the scriptures, we can learn about His teachings and remember to follow
Him.
List each of the standard works and show in which books they appear.
Explain that each book contains true stories about people trying to follow Jesus. The books tell us about Heavenly Father and His church, and show us how to be like Him.
Songtime/activity:
Place each of the gospel art pictures on the chalkboard with magnets. On the
back of each picture, fasten a small paper with the corresponding scripture
reference and the song. (Give chart on following page to music leader and
pianist. Refer to it as needed.) Draw the name of a child to come up and choose
a picture. Discuss what scripture teaching is being portrayed. Invite the child
to read the scripture reference aloud or read it yourself. Sing the song. Repeat
until time runs out.
