Training meeting with Sis. Padock
(shared by Angela)

Sisters, I thought I would share also that Sister Paddock trained primary workers in the Portland area last night.

She had all of us read the purpose of Primary:

"The purpose of Primary is to teach children the gospel of Jesus Christ and help them learn to live it"

She then said that President Menlove has added "with Joy" and asked us to recite it again adding with Joy.

She talked about 3rd. Nephi and Christ visiting the Nephite children.

Chapter 17 in regards to think, ponder and pray for the children, and have compassion for them.

Chapter 21:
He took the children one by one and blessed them saw heavens open and angel came and ministered unto them.

She said that we will only be able to connect with children of today's world through the gospel and teaching of the saviour.
She talked about how she likes potatoes, but she wouldn't want to eat potatoes every day exactly the same way.
She encouraged us to use variety in our teaching methods with the children. Improve Gospel Teachers. Study. Object Lessons. Share Testimony. Pray. Role Play. etc..

She said that with every concept we teach to express your personal testimony of that concept. It doesn't always have to be in the name of Jesus Christ, but just a simple pause in the lesson to say that

you've experienced how this concept has worked in your life and you know it to be true.

Help the children identify when they feel the spirit.

She talked alot about Music and sharing time being integrated. She said to take notice that the outline says sharing time is 30 minutes, not 15 and 15, she said there will be times when you truly need 15 minutes to teach a song, but try in our sharing times to pull music into the concepts we teach. She put this on the overhead

You will remember what you are taught
10% if I tell you something
40% if I tell you a story
60% if I show you a picture
90% if I sing you song

Why do we sing?

She showed a teaching chidren music video, and that was basically that you have to know the music yourself find key points in the music study the scripture references to that song pray for the spirit to recieve guidance and inspiration

She took the hello song and had the women cursie and the men tip their hats on the echo's of hello. That was fun!

She took the You've had a birthday shout hooray song and taught us to hand jive to the rythmn of it. That was also a lot of fun.

Pat your legs twice, clap twice, then hand jive twice, repeat. Snap at the end and then point "to you"
She too divided us into groups giving us different animal sounds to make cow and oxen, shouting out "sheep for sale" etc.. but didn't tell us why.

We practiced making the various sounds all together, and then we would stop when she held up her hand.
She put a picture of the SLC temple up (apologized for not bringing a picture of our beautiful Portland temple) and said if you know this building put your hand on your heart.

What kinds of sounds would you hear in this building?

We talked about those, and then she read from us the scriptures of Christ visiting the temples, and seeing all the bartering and selling going on. She had us make our various noises again. She showed us the picture of Christ being angry, oh yes he was angry boys and girls why do you think he was angry?

Then she asked us if we knew what kind of a building we were in tonight, and what sounds we would expect to hear?

It was a good presentation on reverence for a house of the Lord.

She also read the scripture of Moses/Wall of Jerricho.
We all rolled our papers up and made trumphet noises in them. She said she would read a story and wanted us to remember how many times we heard the #7 We talked about them seeing the wall and what would we do if we had a big wall or obstacle in our life? Pray? and that's what they did. We talked about the different things that pertained to 7 and then acted those out.walked in place 7 times blew trumpet, etc. (can't remember exactly but you get my point)

We sang a primary song "I will Be Valiant" and then she panned her hand over the group and sat back to our chairs like the wall. Very effective!

She talked about children with disabilities in our primaries and reminded us that all spirits and minds on the earth are susceptible to growth. Reffered us to pg. 310 of big red handbook, and also page

52 of Teaching no Greater Call.

Talked about using churh approved resources only, and showed a picture of the angel moroni appearing to Joseph smith in the grove, and had a scripture beside it pertaining to that event, and then ever so quietly said how do you feel now, and then she pulled a piece of paper over and showed us a "cartoon picture" of an angel.

Teach with church approved resources! That was also very effective.

She testified of the new Faith In God program said that she knew it was a program designed the way Heavenly Father saw that it needed to be. She said that the Primary board labored hard and worked diligently to design a program tha would be pleasing to Heavenly Father, and she felt they had achieved it.
