Laurel Rohlfing, "Sharing Time: Read the Scriptures Daily," Friend, Mar.

Preparation:
Read and study applicable Scriptures & Stories
1 Nephi Chapters 3 & 4, Matthew 3: 11-7 and Moses 7:11,
D&C Section 59:5-10
Materials Needed:
Gift wrapped Scriptures
Word strip "Treasure Hunt"
Attention Activity:
Use the word strip "Treasure Hunt," and gift wrap a set of
scriptures. Post the word strip in the front of the room and hide the
wrapped scriptures. Tell the children there is a "treasure" hidden in the
room. Then ask a child to leave the room while you show everyone where the
treasure is hidden. Bring the child back in the room and have him/her look
for it. Have the children guide the child to the treasure by saying "cool"
or "cold" if he/she is far away from it or "warm" or "hot" if he/she is
close to it. When the child finds the treasure, have him/her open it.
Discuss why the scriptures are a great treasure to us.
Why do we need the scriptures? What do the scriptures
offer us?
The more we read our scriptures, the more we will come to
know and love the teachings and stories that are there. If we each have our
own copy of the scriptures, we can carefully underline a scripture or part
of a story to help us find it again. The most important way to read the
scriptures is with a prayer in our hearts that Heavenly Father will help us
understand them.
Share some scripture stories:
1 Nephi Chapters 3 & 4 - Share the story
of Nephi getting the plates
What does this story teach us about the gospel?
-
Faith - talk about how Lehi and Nephi had faith
-
Obedience - even though Nephi might have been scared
he was obedient
-
The brass plates - family history was so important
that Nephi and his brothers needed to go back and get it to preserve
that information.
-
The Lord blesses us when we follow his commandments
Sing: Nephi's Courage (CS pgs. 120-121)
Matthew 3: 11-7 and Moses 7:11 - Example
of Christ being baptized, Enoch is taught about Baptism
What does this story teach us about the gospel?
-
Jesus was baptized just as we must be baptized
-
Jesus is an example for us to follow in all things
including baptism
-
Baptism is a sacred ordinance
Sing: Baptism (CS pgs. 100-101)
D&C Section 59:5-10
What do these versus teach us about the gospel?
- Love the Lord
- Serve him in the name of Jesus
- Love neighbor
- Not to steal
- Not to kill
- Thank the Lord in all things
- Offer sacrifice of broken heart and contrite
spirit
- Sunday is a day of rest and worship
Sing: The Commandments (CS pgs. 112-113)
You might include your favorite scriptural passage and
explain why it is your favorite and what it teaches us about the gospel.
Talk to the children about all the wonderful things we
learn about the gospel through the scriptures. The scriptures are so
important that Heavenly Father made sure they were saved for us in our day.
In fact he guided Joseph Smith to the Gold plates so that the Book Of
Mormon could be translated to help us learn more about the gospel and how to
live it. Ask the children about their favorite scripture stories. Help
them to see the gospel principles that are taught in those stories. Remind
them that the stories in the scriptures are true.
Testimony
Express your gratitude and love for the scriptures. Bear
testimony that the scriptures are Heavenly Father's and Jesus' words and
that by studying the scriptures we can learn what Heavenly Father and Jesus
want us to do.
