Prepare ahead of time:
-
Make a hill of a blanket and some pillows. (rep. Gomorrah)
-
On paper strips write different words from the song: “The Golden plates”
(CS 86)
-
Let the bishop or another priesthood leader tell the children the story
about Joseph Smith
-
I made a golden plate to each child, out of heavy card stock. (gold on
one side and white on the other). Make a secret message for them to solve.
Maybe for the younger children it could be a page they could paint.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Activity:
Let the children try to figure out which song the words come from.
SING: “The Golden plates” (CS 86)
-
Who found the Golden plates? (Yes, Joseph Smith. Today we are going to
talk about him.)
Priesthood leader: tell the story about “The fist
vision”.
-
YOU: Joseph Smith believed what God and Jesus told him. He had great faith.
It is also important that we have faith. Thus it is through faith we learn
and develop us. It is through faith we show heavenly Father that we will
serve him.
SING: "Faith" (CS 96) or “An Angel came to
Joseph Smith” (CS 86)
Priesthood leader: tell when Moroni showed himself
to Joseph, (in Joseph's bedroom at night) - and what happened up until
he received the golden plates, and translated them.
-
YOU: Tell the children that the golden plates became what we today call:
The Book of Mormon. In The Book of Mormon we can read about the people
that lived many years ago. The people wrote about their lives, what happen
to them, and about how they came to America from Israel.
SING: "Book of Mormon Stories" or “An Angel
came to Joseph Smith” (CS 86)
YOU: Pointing at the blanket and pillows.
-
This blanket represents the hill Gomorrah, under it there is a big stone
(pillows). Under the pillows lays the golden plates.
-
Let each child come forward and reach under the blanket and take out a
page of the golden plates.
-
They must now translate their golden plate.
-
Bear your testimony, and tell the children that even they are children,
they too can seek and gain a testimony through study, song, prayer. These
are ways we can straighten our faith.
SING: "I’ll seek the Lord early" (CS 108)
This is the "code" that the children must solve:
