What does Easter mean to you?
(by Lisa, Idaho)

DISCUSSION ABOUT THE ATONEMENT:

Jesus did two things for us at Easter.

  1. Suffered for our sins - so that we may be forgiven if we repent.
  2. Had the power to live again after he died - resurrection.

Because Jesus was resurrected, all of the people who have ever lived on the earth will be resurrected, too.
We call these two things the atonement. (place word strips on the board)

Suffered for our sins + Resurrection = ATONEMENT

ACTIVITY ABOUT CHRIST'S LAST WEEK

  1. I taped the following word strips under chairs randomly.
  2. Then, have the kids match their word strip to the corresponding picture taped up on the board.
  3. Have them stand in order at the front of the primary room so the kids can see the pictures.
  4. Have them each read their parts in order. You could insert Easter songs appropriate for your primary. We will probably close with "I wonder when he comes again" and then spend time working on "I'm trying to be like Jesus".

SUNDAY - TRIUMPHAL ENTRY
As he rode into Jerusalem on a colt the people cried "Hosanna in the Highest".

MONDAY - JESUS CLEANSING THE TEMPLE
This was the second time Jesus cleansed the temple. Then, the blind and lame came to Him in the temple, and He healed them.

TUESDAY - JESUS TEACHING THE PHARISEES
As the Savior entered Jerusalem, the scribes and Pharisees asked Him where He had received His authority. He preached to them and called them to repentance.

WEDNESDAY - WE HAVE NO RECORD OF WHAT OCCURRED ON THIS DAY.

THURSDAY #1 - THE LAST SUPPER
He told the apostles He knew who would betray him. Blessed the bread and wine and told them to eat in remembrance of His body and his blood that would be shed.

THURSDAY #2 - JESUS WASHING THE DISCIPLES' FEET

THURSDAY #3 - JESUS PRAYING IN GETHSEMANE
He suffered for the sins of the world in the Garden of Gethsemane. As He prayed, He was in such agony that He sweat "great drops of blood".

THURSDAY #4 - THE BETRAYAL OF JESUS
For 30 pieces of silver, Judas Iscariot, one of the 12 apostles, betrayed Christ by giving him a kiss as a sign to the soldiers. Peter tried to protect Christ by cutting off the ear of Malchus, the high priest's servant. Christ's last mortal miracle was to restore the ear.

FRIDAY #1 - JESUS ON TRIAL
After the trial, Jesus was taken to Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor. He could find no fault. It was customary to release one prisoner during the feast of the Passover. The crowed chose to free Barabbas, a convicted robber and murderer and crucify Jesus.

FRIDAY #2 - THE CRUCIFIXION
While He hung there, darkness covered the land for three hours and a violent
earthquake occurred, for men were murdering their Creator.

FRIDAY #3 - BURIAL OF JESUS

SATURDAY:
The Savior was in the spirit world preparing for the gospel to be taught to the spirits in prison.

SUNDAY: MARY AND THE RESURRECTED LORD
When Mary Magdalene and the other women came to see the sepulcher, and angel
had rolled back the stone in front of the tomb. He told the women not to fear, for Christ had risen from the dead. The other women ran back to tell the Apostles, but Mary lingered near the tomb. Christ appeared to her, then to His Apostles, and then to many others as a resurrected being.
