The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has issued a news release and sent letters to stakes reminding media and members that the Church should be referred to by its official title.
Church officials are discouraging use of titles such as "Mormon Church" or "LDS Church."
"We've been trying for years to emphasize the Church's full and correct name," says church spokesman Michael Otterson. However, Church officials say the term Mormon" is still acceptable in titles, and church members can be referred to as Mormons. They say it is also acceptable to refer to culture, lifestyle, and doctrine as Mormonism. "There's nothing wrong with the word Mormon," explains church spokesman Dale Bills. "It's an honorable name. We simply see Mormon Church or LDS Church as diverting attention from the centrality of Jesus Christ in our lives."
